Snap CD is Now Source-Available

May 18, 2026

Snap CD has now been published source-available and is self-hostable. The full project is available here.

The Community edition offers all core functionality, with only a few premium features gated off. In addition there is Community+ is a free, self-service step up from Community. It doubles the module cap (from 10 to 20) while keeping the same feature set — no premium features, but enough room for a small operator or a serious hobbyist to manage real infrastructure. Sign in to your snapcd.io account and claim a Community+ token for your organization; you can rotate the key at any time, and only one active Community+ token is issued per organization. The token is valid for one year and can be renewed from the same page.

Premium features are available under the Lite and Enterprise editions and include:

  • Single Sign-On (SSO)
  • Fine-grained RBAC
  • Approval workflows
  • Bot protection (Turnstile)
  • Premium Message Broker (Azure Service Bus)
  • Premium Secret Storage (Azure Key Vault)
  • Premium Email Providers

Where Cloud still fits

Self-hosting is the right answer when:

  • You need the server inside your own network for compliance or data-residency reasons.
  • You already operate the dependencies (SQL Server, message broker, secret store) and prefer to keep that operational footprint in-house.
  • You want the source as part of your supply-chain audit story.

Cloud (snapcd.io) is still the right answer when:

  • You don't want to run the server, the database, the message broker, the secret store, the certificate rotation, or the upgrades.
  • You want billing handled by metered usage rather than by purchasing edition tokens up front.
  • You want zero-friction onboarding — sign in, create an organization, point a runner at it, deploy.

Cloud and self-hosted are the same orchestrator. There is no feature in Cloud that isn't in the self-hosted server (under the appropriate edition), and the Terraform Provider is wire-compatible with both.
